Rebecca Lassem, who played for IBK Industrial Bank before, has moved to the Puerto Rican league.
The Guinabo Mets, based in Guinabo, Puerto Rico, said on its official SNS on the 14th (Korea Standard Time), "We are happy to announce that Rebekah Lassem has joined Guinabo Mets. Rebekah has an impressive record in college leagues and professional leagues. Lassem, who played at the University of Denver, played in professional leagues in Korea, Greece, and the United States."
The Guinabo Mets women's volleyball team was founded in 1970 and has been a three-time champion in the Puerto Rican professional league (78, 93-94 and 95 seasons). The Puerto Rican women's league currently consists of 29 teams, and the Guinabo Mets, who acquired Lassem, ranked seventh in the league last season.
Lassem, whose grandmother is known as a Korean-American immigrant, joined the Industrial Bank of Korea in the sixth place in the tryout of the 21-22 season. However, he did not show much performance compared to other foreigners. To make matters worse, controversy arose over Cho's unauthorized departure from the team in the middle of the season, and eventually, he was replaced by Dalí Santana of the U.S. to raise the team's power and renew the atmosphere.
At that time, Lassem reported the news of his release from the scene while the team was suffering from internal strife. Nevertheless, he also made many fans feel sorry for him by playing his best and leaving the game. 안전놀이터
In the 21-22 season, Lassem played in 47 sets in 14 games, scored 199 points, and recorded an attack success rate of 34.82%.
Afterwards, Lassem moved to the Greek league and played for ASP Tetis and AO Markopolo. During the season when he was inactive, he played as a short-term coach at Coach Nemec Martin's Volleyball Academy, which he worked with at Industrial Bank of Korea, and then briefly played in the U.S. short-term league, the Athlets Unlimited Volleyball (AU) League, in October.
Lassem will also be joined by a familiar leader with ties to Korea. On Nov. 16, Guinabo Mets announced the appointment of Fernando Morales, who currently leads the Korean women's volleyball team as the team's manager.
"I'm happy to appoint Fernando Morales as the coach of the new Guinabo Mets," the Mets said on social media at the time. "Morales has a wide career in the NCAA, has been the former coach of the Puerto Rico national team, and is currently the leader of the Korean women's volleyball team."
Morales was newly appointed to South Korea in April after Cesar Hernández González, who previously led the women's volleyball team, stepped down. Since then, he has had 2 wins and 10 losses in the final stage of the 2024 Volleyball Nations League (VNL), his first debut for the Korean national team. The VNL's two wins by Korean women's volleyball is the best since its three wins in 2021.
Meanwhile, the Korean women's volleyball team, led by Morales, is scheduled to play 2025 VNL games in copyright, Brazil and China from June 4 to July 13, 2025.
